The treatment of some conditions can be better achieved by stimulating certain acupoints by heat. Sticks of dried herbs are ignited and held close to the skin, whether above specific points or along larger body zones. The herb most typically used is known as "Mugwort", or Artemesia Vulgaris. Moxibustion has proven very effective to move stagnant blood and energy which, according to Chinese medicine, may cause and/or lead to many painful conditions such as arthritis.
Rarely have I had any pet object to the use of moxa. In fact, most love it as its heat is a deep and soothing one and its smell is mildly sedative. I always remember B.G., a beautiful Labrador, who just wouldn't stop vocalizing until the moxa stick was finally lit!
